Who is Wilbur Ross?

Wilbur Ross is an American investor known for restructuring failed companies in various industries such as steel, coal, telecommunications, foreign investment, and textiles. He specializes in leveraged buyouts and distressed businesses. Ross grew up in a financially well-off family in suburban New Jersey, attended an elite Catholic college prep school in Manhattan, and earned his undergraduate degree from Yale College, where his father also attended. He received his MBA at Harvard Business School and built his reputation as a bankruptcy advisor in the mid-1970s.

In 2000, Ross opened WL Ross & Company in New York after running a private-equity fund within Rothschild for three years. The firm’s investment committee comprises four top managers, including Ross. He serves on the board of advisors of Yale School of Management and has also served on the US-Russia Investment Fund board under President Bill Clinton and as Mayor Giuliani’s privatization advisor. Ross was previously married to former New York Lieutenant Governor, Betsy McCaughey Ross.
