"I would have married Steve Wyatt. He was the most romantic of them all. I did real things with him, like hiking at weekends, candlelit dinners for two, as well as traipse round the London party scene." 'We started dating when I first moved to London, we moved in together and after two years he proposed. I accepted. But when he went to tell his mother in their big house in Texas she'd said he'd be disinherited if he married me.' There is a long silence. Denice looks at me wryly, then breaks into laughter. 'I didn't come from a rich background but I wasn't a pauper. I was an ordinary American girl: my father was an engineer, my mother was a homemaker. I went to college, became a hairdresser until I got asked to be a model in New York. 'But Steve ended up with someone from a rich background, of whom his parents approved.' She and Wyatt split up soon after proposal when he started seeing a former girlfriend behind her back - before meeting the Duchess of York. Denice drifted into the arms of Tim Jefferies, whom she met on a modelling assignment in West End gallery, Hamiltons."
