Marco Reus extends Borussia Dortmund contract until 2024

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The 33-year-old midfielder was due to become a free agent in the summer but he has now put pen to paper on a deal which will see him stay at the club until June 2024.

Reus originally joined Dortmund at the age of six. He progressed through the ranks of Dortmund’s academy before joining Rot Weiss Ahlen and then Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Germany international, who has been capped 48 times by his country, rejoined Dortmund in 2012.

He said of signing a new deal: “As a team, we – just like all of our fans – have a big goal on our minds right now which our full focus is on: we want to become German champions; to do that, we’ll need every single Borusse. But beyond that, I still really want to do my best for the club I’ve spent over half my life with.

“There’s still nothing better for me than scoring goals in front of the best fans in the world in the most beautiful stadium in the world and celebrating victories together. That’s why I’m happy I’ve extended my contract for another year, because I’ve always said there’s no other club I’d prefer to play for over BVB in my career.”

Dortmund’s chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke heaped praise on Reus after his contract extension was confirmed.

“Marco has had a lot of bad luck with injuries, but he’s a Borusse through and through and as the captain of our team, he pursues exactly the same goals we all do: he is and remains supremely ambitious to lead our BVB to its greatest objectives,” said Watzke.

Reus has scored eight goals in 26 games for Dortmund so far this season. He is only 16 goals behind Dortmund’s all-time top scorer Adi Preissler.

Fellow veteran Mats Hummels, meanwhile, is still without a contract extension with the 34-year-old’s current deal due to expire at the end of this season.

Bundesliga table-toppers Dortmund are next in action on Friday when they travel to VfL Bochum.
