“Hawaii” by Public Image Ltd

Good luck trying to come to your own conclusive consensus concerning the meaning of the lyrics of Public Image Ltd’s “Hawaii”. Lyrically, this song is simplistic to the point of being borderline ambiguous.

What is ascertainable – or at least felt, if you will – is that the mention of Hawaii is symbolic, and that the wording somehow points to a troubled relationship the vocalist is in with the addressee. It appears that their union, which reads like a very close one, is on the verge of coming to a conclusion. And both parties are in their feelings accordingly, though by the looks of things the addressee more so, as the vocalist has tasked himself with comforting her.

What said vocalist, John Lydon, has revealed is that the message behind “Hawaii” is twofold. The first intended purpose is to relay the notion “that ultimately love conquers all”. Also, he has dedicated it “to everyone going through tough times… with the person they care for the most”.

That latter sentiment was actually inspired by the nature of the relationship between John and his spouse, Nora and more specifically the unfortunate fact that she has Alzheimer’s disease. But to reiterate, the listener would probably be challenged in terms of ascertaining those sentiments from the lyrics themselves, which rather read like the relationship between the vocalist and the person he’s singing to has already come to an end, and the former by and large appears to have made peace with that fact.
