On Monday, June 10th, 2023, tragedy struck the small community of Reinbeck, Iowa. 17-year-old Connor Allen died in a fatal UTV accident three miles south of Parkersburg.

The accident occurred in a rural area’s 22,000th mile of the 120th highway.

The UTV that Connor Allen was traveling in flipped over after being driven by a minor who lost control of the vehicle.

According to reports, the driver attempted to avoid a collision with a fence, resulting in the accident.

Unfortunately, Allen was not wearing a restraint and became trapped underneath the vehicle.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Allen sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Into Fatal UTV Accident Still Ongoing

The Iowa State Patrol attended the accident scene.

In a collaborative effort, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Parkersburg Ambulance, Parkersburg Police Department, and Butler County Sheriff’s Office worked together to address the situation.

After the incident, the juvenile driver was promptly taken to Mercy One Waterloo for medical care. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were determined to be non-life-threatening.

Currently, an ongoing investigation is underway to ascertain the precise details of the accident.

Bicyclist Struck In Separate Accident

The same morning as the UTV accident, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office responded to another incident. This collision occurred two and a half miles east of Dike on Old Highway 20 (D-19) on 160th Street.

A bicyclist, John Keiser, was hit by a vehicle driven by 89-year-old Dike resident Dennis Koch. Koch was operating his 2018 Jeep on Old Highway 20 (D-19), traveling westbound when he collided with the bicyclist, who was also traveling in the same direction on the roadway.

Keiser was transported to Mercy One Cedar Falls, and his injuries are currently unclear. Koch received a ticket for his unsafe driving practices in proximity to the bicyclist.

These two incidents within the same county on the same day are a tragic reminder of the inherent dangers present on our roads.

The Importance of Safe Driving

It is essential to keep in mind the significance of safe driving practices even though the cause of the UTV accident is still the subject of an investigation.

Driving on city streets or rural roads can be risky, so it’s important to be attentive, sober, and cautious.

They must always be aware of their surroundings and avoid driving while intoxicated, distracted, or exhausted.

These procedures increase the likelihood of safe road travel, despite the fact that accidents can still occur.
