Adam Rippon started working with coach Yelena Sergeeva from 2000 to 2007. In 2005, he won a silver medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and a gold medal at the Triglav Trophy in Slovenia. He then moved to coach Nikolai Morozov in 2007 and won several medals during the 2007-08 season. He won the Junior title at the 2008 U.S. Championships and a gold medal at the 2008 Junior Worlds. He began competing at the senior level in 2008-2009 and won the 2009 Junior World Championships, making him the first single skater to win the World Junior title twice. In 2018, Rippon criticized Vice President Mike Pence for leading the U.S. delegation to the Winter Olympics, citing Pence’s support of gay conversion therapy. He campaigned for Senator Elizabeth Warren during the 2020 presidential primaries and donated to The Okra Project, a charity supporting Black Trans People.

Russian skater Alexei Yagudin made abhorrent comments about Rippon, prompting him to donate $1,000 to The Okra Project in Yagudin’s name.
