BANKS COUNTY, Ga. — A driver and her passengers sustained minor injuries after authorities said she lost control of her car and hit a Banks County sheriff's deputy.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the 35-year-old Virginia woman was driving north in the left lane on Interstate-85 when she spotted the deputy sitting with lights activated on the shoulder of the roadway.
Authorities said she braked hard as she approached the deputy, causing her to lose control, due to the wintry weather conditions. GSP said she hit the a cable barrier before hitting the deputy's patrol car with the front of her car.
The impact left her and one of her 25-year-old passengers with minor injuries. A second 25-year-old passenger was not hurt. The deputy was also not hurt.
The woman was cited for failure to maintain her lane, and was issued a warning for reportedly violating Georgia's Move Over Law.
A weather system that moved through Saturday night into Sunday drenched metro Atlanta with heavy rains, and led to significant snow and ice accumulation in the northeastern part of the state where temperatures were colder. Because of the winter weather, roads in north Georgia quickly became impassable.
