Vernon Maxwell was born on September 12, 1965, in Gainesville, Florida. He attended Buchholz High School where he played basketball and football, earning the title of Mr. Basketball in the state of Florida during his senior year. He went on to attend the University of Florida on an athletic scholarship and played for the Gators basketball team from 1984 to 1988. Maxwell left school after four years holding 15 Gators team records. However, due to a scandal involving accepting money from agents and a free round-trip ticket, Florida erased the points he scored during his junior and senior seasons.

Vernon Maxwell’s NBA Career

Vernon Maxwell was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 47th overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft. He played for various teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, and Dallas Mavericks. He won two NBA championships with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995.

Maxwell was known for his ability to make clutch three-point shots and is one of just nine players in NBA history to score 30 points in a single quarter. He achieved this feat in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 26, 1991, where he scored a total of 51 points. Over his 13-year career, Maxwell averaged 12.8 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game, and 3.4 assists per game.

Vernon Maxwell was involved in several behavioral incidents throughout his career. In February of 1995, he was suspended for 10 games and fined $20,000 for punching a heckling fan during a game in Portland.

Shortly after the playoffs in April of 1995, he feigned a hamstring injury and went on a leave of absence. He later admitted that he was frustrated with not playing after the Rockets acquired Hall-of-Fame guard Clyde Drexler.

After signing with Philadelphia in August of 1995, he was pulled over for running a red light and police found a bag of marijuana on the floor of his car. He pleaded no contest and posted a $25,000 bond but lost the appeal. Three years later while playing for the Hornets, a Texas judge issued a warrant for his arrest and he served a 90-day sentence after being extradited to Houston.

In March of 2000, Maxwell and Gary Payton were fined by the Seattle SuperSonics for a locker room brawl that left two of their teammates hurt.
