At the very start of his career, in the 2001 season, he worked with Eastern Arizona College as a special teams coordinator and a defensive backs coach.
In 2002, Kalani returned to BYU- his alma mater, as a graduate assistant for defense. In 2003, he joined Southern Utah University as running backs and tight ends coach.
He stayed with them till the 2004 season, where he coached the tight ends and offensive lines.
He started working with the University of Utah in 2005. He formally became a defensive coordinator at the university in 2009.
After that, in the 2014 season, he joined Oregon State University as the team's assistant coach and team's new defensive coordinator.
Sitake joined BYU on December 19, 2015, as the new head coach of their football team. He has been with BYU ever since. He has also received a contract extension up to the 2025 season.
