In 2023, Netflix’s film department, led by Stuber, furthered its aim to focus on more “broadly entertaining projects” while reinforcing relationships with top filmmakers including David Fincher and Todd Haynes. The streamer picked up 16 Oscar nods, winning four for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” animated film for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and “The Elephant Whisperer” for documentary short. The former vice chairman of worldwide production at Universal, Stuber oversaw such commercial titles as “Murder Mystery 2,” “Extraction 2” and “Bird Box Barcelona.” Despite challenges to the streaming business on top of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Netflix movies had a strong showing at fall festivals. Titles that grabbed awards attention included Pablo Larraín’s “El Conde”; “Nyad,” starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster; Fincher’s “The Killer” with Michael Fassbender; “Rustin,” with Colman Domingo; Haynes’ “May December,” starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman; and Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.”
