Rutger Hauer was a Dutch actor and writer who had a net worth of $16 million at the time of his death. He began his acting career in the late 1960s with a role in the Dutch medieval action drama, Floris, which made him a famous actor in his native country. Hauer went on to appear in numerous films, including the British film The Wilby Conspiracy, the American film Nighthawks, and the blockbuster hit Blade Runner.
Despite heavy involvement in low-budget films in the 1990s, Hauer continued to appear regularly in English and American productions. He received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in the British TV film Escape for Sobibor. Hauer was also an environmentalist and AIDS activist who founded an AIDS awareness organization called the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association. All the proceeds from his 2007 autobiography were donated to his foundation.
