Pat led the side during the first two Tests against India before returning to Australia to care for his mom while she was in palliative care.
Steve Smith has played captain’s responsibility in his absence, and the team has commended Pat for his captaincy in the first two Tests.
Last month, an Australian middle-order batsman, Peter Handscomb, said, “To be able to put that to one side while he’s out captaining his country and trying to win Test matches is a pretty incredible effort, I think that speaks volumes about his character and why he’s been such an incredible captain for us.”
Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who played through the 2020-2021 Test cricket series against India at the urgency of his father, Paul, when he had cancer, has also praised his skipper.
Starc said that Pat Cummins is exactly where he needed to be now to give his love and support to his family.
Australia will continue day two on 4-255 with Cameron Green (49 not out) and Usman Khawaja (104 not out).
Australian fast bowler- Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins is a cricketer who epitomizes the Australian spirit of never giving up. Despite a fantastic start to his career, injuries nearly forced him to retire, but the star all-rounder overcame the odds and currently stands leading the ICC Test bowling rankings. He is Australia’s Test and One-Day International captain.
Pat Cummins began his junior cricket career with the Glenbrook Cricket Club. In 2010, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Penrith.
The 2010-11 season was his greatest in domestic cricket, as he finished as the leading wicket-taker in the T20 Big Bash League. In March 2011, he made his first-class debut against Tasmania, taking his maiden four-wicket haul.
At the age of 18 years, Cummins became the youngest Australian player to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He accomplished the feat against South Africa in the second Test at Johannesburg in November 2011.
Cummins took 99 wickets in 2019 – 59 in Tests, 31 in ODIs, and nine in T20 Internationals.
Cummins is only the second Australian captain, joining George Giffen in 1984, to record a five-wicket haul in his debut Test as captain. He became the first skipper since Bob Willis in 1982 to record a five-wicket haul in the Ashes.
