The officers used their patrol cars for cover and returned fire, striking Milteer, according to the state agency. No officers were injured, but the vehicles were hit several times, police confirmed.
The gunfire from officers also struck another person who was inside the house, police said.
Milteer was taken to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center in critical condition, the GBI said. The second person, who had an injury not considered life-threatening, was treated and released from the hospital.
It was the 87th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023. Once it is complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Bartow County District Attorney’s Office for review.
