Latest on Brown's Payment, Potential Suspension

Sunday, Oct. 30

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com discussed Brown's payment situation and potential suspension:

Former Giants kicker Josh Brown is eligible to receive the remaining $720,480 of his 2016 contract through termination pay, according to league sources, after being released last week following further revelations about the potential scope of his domestic abuse. The NFL is continuing to investigate Brown's case despite him being not currently active in the league, and a lengthy suspension is expected.

Brown has never before claimed the one-time termination pay benefit, according to NFLPA sources, and thus is in line to recoup the remainder of what he was owed as a vested veteran in this year of his contract. Brown signed a two-year deal with the Giants in the offseason.

The NFL has come under heavy scrutiny for suspending Brown for only one game following the arrest, echoing many complaints over how the league handled a similar situation with Ray Rice in 2014.

Giants Cut Brown

Tuesday, Oct. 25

The Giants announced the move along with a statement from team president John Mara (h/t Tom Pelissero of USA Today):

In statement, Giants prez John Mara says: “Our beliefs, our judgments and our decisions were misguided. We accept that responsibility."

Earlier in the day, Brown issued a statement, provided by Adam Schefter on his Facebook page:

I am sorry that my past has called into question the character or integrity of The New York Giants, Mr. Mara or any of those who have supported me along the way. I have taken measures to get help so that I may be the voice of change, not a statistic. It is important to share that I never struck my wife, and never would. Abuse takes many forms, and is not a gray area. Through the past several years I have worked to identify and rectify my own behaviors. The road to rehabilitation is a journey and a constant modification of a way of life. My journey will continue forever as a person determined to leave a positive legacy and I embrace the opportunities to show and speak about what has helped me to be that man. In the interim, I am cooperating with the Giants and the NFL. Thank you to everyone that has supported me, I will not let you down.

Brown was placed on the commissioner's exempt list on Oct. 21

The move came after SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported that the 37-year-old had previously admitted to physically and verbally abusing his wife.

In May 2015, Washington authorities arrested Brown on a charge of assault in an alleged domestic incident with his wife. At the time, Molly Brown told the police her husband had abused her on more than 20 occasions, according to the New York Daily News' Seth Walder.
