Hall of Fame player Joe Dumars is leaving the Sacramento Kings front office to become the NBA executive vice president, head of basketball operations, the league announced Monday.
Dumars, a two-time NBA champion as a player with Detroit who also led the Pistons to the 2004 championship as an executive, begins his new role May 9. Dumars will report to President of League Operations Byron Spruell and will have duties that include overseeing developing playing rules and interpretations, conduct and discipline.
Dumars has been with the Kings for three seasons, the last two as chief strategy officer, where he helped with strategies in several areas, including business, basketball, entertainment and real estate.

Kings down to final interviews in coaching search amid Joe Dumars' mysterious exit
What does this mean for the Kings?
Jason Jones, senior NBA writer: Since Dumars arrived as a part of the front office, it hasn't always been clear how much influence he has in decision making. His insights as an advisor in his first year contributed to Vlade Divac's ouster as general manager, but Dumars did not step in to run basketball operations.
The team opted to hire Monte McNair as general manager while naming Dumars chief strategy officer over the last two seasons. Dumars leaving in the middle of a coaching search means McNair is running basketball operations with principle owner Vivek Ranadivé having the final say.
