Having Snatched Away 2 NBA Championships From Karl Malone, 40-Year-Old Michael Jordan ‘Stole’ Jazz Legend’s ‘Oldest Player’ Record

Michael Jordan‘s career was filled with surprises. Playing 14 seasons in the NBA, MJ retired thrice, coming out of retirement twice in 1995 and 2001. His second return, saw him play for the Washington Wizards, where he broke several records. In particular, he broke the record for the oldest player to score 40 points on more than one occasion. A record that was formerly held by his rival Karl Malone, whom he defeated twice in the NBA Finals.

His Airness got the better of The Mailman in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals. The victories over Malone’s Utah Jazz ensured that Jordan would complete the second three-peat of his career. It was a historic moment for the Bulls legend, but one that marked the downfall of Malone. Since then, his game deteriorated, and his production on the court took a huge hit.

MJ snatched Karl Malone’s record three years after beating him to win back-to-back NBA Championships

In the 2000-2001 season, Malone made headlines when he set the record for the oldest player to have a 40-point game. However, he didn’t hold this record for long.

Not long after setting the record, The Mailman had it taken away from him by none other than Michael Jordan. Having already beaten him twice in 1997 and 1998, MJ not only beat Malone’s record once, but twice. Just another reason why Jordan is the greatest player of all time. After all, it takes a lot to even breach double digits in points, especially at the age of 40.

To this day, His Airness still holds the record for the oldest player to score 40 points. He set it while facing the New Jersey Nets on February 23, 2003. He put on an exemplary performance, recording 43 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and four steals. For those in attendance, it was like watching a prime MJ strut his stuff.

Jordan truly is the greatest player of all time. And, while many players have presented themselves, challenging him for the title, he still remains at the top of everyone’s lists. It will take a lot, even for a player like LeBron James, who is the closest to the throne, to actually take the title of GOAT away from him.

Malone once picked Scottie Pippen over His Airness when selecting his dream team

It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that Karl Malone has some regret having faced Michael Jordan. A player who was his bane for most of his 19-year career. So, when he was asked to pick his dream NBA team, bias could have been a reason why he chose Scottie Pippen over His Airness.

It was an astounding choice, one that many wouldn’t agree with. However, the possible bias aside, Malone’s reasoning was actually quite logical. He suggested that Scottie would be his first choice, simply because he watched him dominate every statistical category after MJ initially retired in 1993.

It definitely is an interesting explanation for his choice. And, while it is hard to agree with him, seeing as the Bulls didn’t really amount to much under Scottie’s leadership, his choice is his own. It still doesn’t take away from the greatness that was Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
