Grand Mercure Hotel Review, Auckland, New Zealand

Rooms face the city or the harbour (both are good views). Here, the feel is modern and professional: the tones are charcoal, white and oatmeal but art is warm and interesting. In the Waihorotipu suite, a flock of sorbet-coloured glass birds have fluttered across the living room wall. Standard rooms contain a queen-sized bed, monsoon shower with local manuka honey-based products, writing desk and kitchenette.

Suites feature generous living rooms, and French doors lead to a writing nook and separate bedroom. In the bathroom, a two-person tub awaits with fresh flowers, bath bombs and a television. There were some plumbing problems during my stay – the shower swung from scalding to icy, and created a small flood across the floor – but these may be isolated incidents.
