COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- A bomb exploded on a bus Friday evening in a Colombo suburb, killing 23 people and injuring 52, police sources told CNN.
The vehicle was stopped at a crowded bus station in Piliyandala when the bomb exploded, they said.
A military spokesman said the attack took place at 6.45 p.m. local time, and he blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels, The Associated Press reported.
Ambulances took wounded to a nearby hospital, where off-duty doctors and nurses ran in to help the injured, AP said. A young boy and girl were among those taken inside.
The bombing came two days after more than 100 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed and another 400 wounded during an advance on a Tamil stronghold in the northern Wanni region. E-mail to a friend
