The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What the achievement means for McDavid

Getting to 150 points is an amazing accomplishment for McDavid. He’s now with some elite company, joining Gretzky (nine times), Lemieux (four times), Yzerman, Esposito and Nicholls in that club. If McDavid can get to 156 points this season, he’ll rank behind just Gretzky and Lemieux perhaps the two best players in league history in terms of highest-scoring seasons in league history. How impressive is McDavid’s 2022-23 campaign?

McDavid’s 2022-23 campaign is one for the ages. He’s going to win the Rocket Richard and Art Ross trophies. He’ll be a shoo-in for the Ted Lindsay Award. He should claim the Hart Trophy and do so unanimously. This production is reminiscent of the truncated 2021 season when he had 105 points in 56 games while playing against the same six teams in the Canadian division. Hockey Reference ranks McDavid’s 2021 work as more impressive based on era-adjusted data. However, McDavid’s all-around play namely defensive work and penalty killing is much better now than it was two years ago. Nugent-Bowman
