A Stylist Told Me That Everybody in L.A. Is Wearing These Jeans

It’s no secret that trying out a new denim style can majorly revamp your wardrobe and freshen up your overall look. For example, if you are used to wearing skinny jeans, swapping them out for a wide leg pair could potentially make you feel like a new person (even if you’re doubtful at first). If you ask me, Los Angeles is basically the origin of every great denim trend. Now that I don’t live there, I rely on my Angeleno friends — especially fashion veteran, designer, and stylist Amber Farr — to fill me in on what jeans I should be wearing every season. And, according to her, all the cool girls in L.A. are wearing a slouchy, wide-legged style from Free People

“Jeans not only are they the hub of our wardrobe but they can change your look just by their shape, color or wash,” she explains to me. The Free People Old West Slouchy Jeans are her current must-have of the moment. One of the things she loves about the high rise, exaggerated wide leg style is that it makes a serious impact without a whole lot of effort. And, compared to designer denim, the $128 price tag is surprisingly affordable. “Not only does it give you an instant cool-girl vibe it also comes at the most wallet-friendly price compared to similar styles out there,” says Farr.

As for wearability, “it may be the most comfortable jean in your closet ,” Farr says — and reviewers agree. One shopper described them as “soft and gooey” jeans,  while another raved that they are “sooo cozy.” People also maintain that despite the oversized style, the jeans are surprisingly flattering. They’re available in sizes 24 to 35, and according to the consensus, they run true-to-size but are a tad on the longer side. (Some washes are available in a shorter inseam.) If you are going for the low-slung, slouchy look, you should consider sizing up, according to reviewers.

Another bonus? “They come in many colors,” says Farr (12 washes to be exact), “but hurry, because sizes are selling out fast.” As for what to wear with the relaxed style, the possibilities are endless. Many reviewers shared photos of themselves pairing the style with everything from crop tops and bodysuits to loose-fitting sweaters and blouses.

If you are worried about the expiration date of the wide-legged jean trend, don’t be, Farr assures. While 2023 may have been the year of the baggy jean, “slouchy, oversized denim is here to stay.”
